Is OpenMat actually free for students?
Yes. Free forever. No credit card required. No trial period. No freemium bait-and-switch. The full student experience — session logging, XP, streaks, Beacon, Sensei AI, The Mat community, Rewards Shop, Technique Library, Gear Tracker, Weight Tracker, Belt Estimator, Tournament Bracket, Game Plan, Photo Library, and all 40+ features — are completely free for students, permanently. The only paid plans are the $19/month Coach plan (for instructors who want student management tools) and the Academy CRM platform (for academy owners who want AI-powered growth systems).
What disciplines does OpenMat support?
BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, Strength & Conditioning, Mobility, and Cardio are the six core disciplines for session logging. Beacon supports filtering by activity type (rolling, sparring, drilling) which maps across all grappling and striking arts. The community and programs cover BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, Strength, and Mobility with certified instructors. We are adding Wrestling, Boxing, Judo, and Kickboxing in post-launch updates based on community demand.
When does OpenMat launch? When do I get access?
We are releasing early access to the waitlist in rolling waves — founding tier members first, in order of sign-up within each tier. You will receive an email with your activation link before we open to the public. Gold Tier members get access first, then Silver, then Bronze. All founding members are guaranteed access before public launch day. Your queue position is confirmed in the welcome email you receive when you join.
Does OpenMat work on iPhone and Android?
OpenMat is a Progressive Web App (PWA) — it runs in your browser and can be installed to your home screen on both iOS and Android for a full native app experience. No app store required for early access. Native iOS and Android apps are on the roadmap and founding members get early access to the native builds before public release. The PWA works identically to a native app — offline support, push notifications, camera access, and geolocation all included.
Is my training data safe? Can I export it?
Your data is 100% exportable at any time as a single
openmat.json file from Settings → Data Management. Sessions, achievements, messages, lineage, assessments, gear, photos — everything. Import it back or use it however you want. The app auto-saves every 15 seconds. You are never locked in. Your training history belongs to you, not us. If OpenMat ever shut down — which we are not planning — you would have your complete training record in a portable, standard JSON format.How does OpenMat make money if the student plan is free?

How is the founding badge different from a regular account badge?
The founding tier badge (Gold, Silver, or Bronze) is a permanent, non-earnable marker on your profile that shows you were part of the original founding group. It appears on your public profile page, your shareable profile card, and next to your posts in The Mat community feed. It cannot be purchased after launch, cannot be earned through training, and cannot be obtained through any means other than being a founding member who activated their account. Once the tiers are full and we launch publicly, these badges are permanently closed.
Are the spots actually limited or is this just marketing?
The caps are real and hard-coded. Gold: 100. Silver: 1,000. Bronze: 10,000. When a tier fills, it closes. The badge becomes unavailable. The coach pricing perk for that tier locks in for current holders but new signups go to standard pricing. We are not going to quietly extend the caps — the founding member value proposition depends on the tiers being genuinely exclusive. If you're reading this and Gold or Silver is still open, that is accurate real-time data from our waitlist system.
What happens if I join the waitlist but don't activate when I get my invite?
Your waitlist spot and tier assignment are held for 30 days from the date your activation email is sent. If you don't activate within 30 days, your founding tier perks expire and your spot is released to the next person in the queue. You can still sign up for a standard account after that — you just won't have the founding member perks. We send reminder emails at day 7, day 14, and day 28 before your spot expires.

How does the Beacon feature work? Is my location shared?
Beacon uses your location only when you explicitly turn it on. You control exactly what's visible: your activity type (rolling/sparring/drilling), sub-type, intensity, preferred partner rank, gender preference, host academy, and search radius (1–50 miles). Other users see your name, rank, and what you're looking for — but not your precise GPS coordinates. You appear as a relative distance (e.g., "0.3 miles away"), not a pin on a map. You can also set whether you're hosting at your academy or willing to travel to someone else's gym. Turn off Beacon and you become completely invisible instantly — no residual tracking.
What is Sensei AI and how is it different from just using ChatGPT?
Sensei AI is a purpose-built martial arts coaching assistant that runs through a secure server-side proxy — no API keys stored on your device, no data sent to third-party services without encryption. The critical difference from generic AI: Sensei AI knows your specific training context. It has access to your rank, stripes, belt color, total sessions, mat hours, current streak, disciplines trained, and training history. When you ask "how do I escape mount?", it answers relative to a blue belt with 180 BJJ sessions and a 24-day streak — not a generic internet answer. The more you log, the more personalized every response becomes. Available 24/7 inside the app with no additional cost.
How does the rank verification and assessment system work?
Any OpenMat user can request an assessment from someone at least two ranks above them — typically their professor or a senior training partner. The assessor receives a notification, evaluates the student's technique (either in person or via video), and confirms or declines the rank inside the app. Upon confirmation, the student's profile receives a blue verified checkmark next to their rank that appears everywhere — their profile page, their share card, their community posts, and their Beacon listing. The full assessment history is stored permanently on the student's profile with the assessor's name, rank, date, discipline, confirmed rank, and notes. This is the first martial arts platform to implement a peer-verified rank system at scale.
What are Mat Points and how do I earn them?
Mat Points are OpenMat's reward currency earned entirely through training activity. You earn them by: completing training sessions, hitting streak milestones (7, 14, 30, 60, 100, 365 days), completing daily/weekly/monthly missions, unlocking achievements, logging training photos, rating training partners, logging weight check-ins, and completing programs. Mat Points are redeemable in the Rewards Shop for over 30 items across 6 categories: Training (drop-in sessions, open mat passes, week and month passes, private lessons), Gear (gi patches, mouthguards, tape, knee pads, water bottles), Apparel (rash guards, gis, shorts, hats), Supplements (protein, pre-workout, BCAAs, electrolytes), Digital (video packs, course access, game plan templates), and Experiences (seminar access, competition entry, belt ceremony tickets). You can also purchase Mat Points directly if you want to redeem faster. Founding members receive bonus points (2,500–10,000 depending on tier) on activation day.
How does the Belt Estimator work? Is it accurate?
The Belt Estimator uses your actual training data — total sessions, mat hours, months training, sessions per month, current rank, and stripes — to calculate a projected promotion timeline. It compares your training pace to average historical promotion timelines for each belt level in BJJ and shows a progress percentage, estimated date, and what factors would accelerate or slow your timeline. It is an estimate, not a guarantee. Actual promotion depends entirely on your instructor's assessment of your technique, competition experience, attitude, and academy requirements. The estimator is designed to motivate consistency and help you understand the relationship between training frequency and rank progression — not to replace your professor's judgment. We recommend using it in conjunction with requesting a formal Assessment from your instructor for the most accurate picture.
Can I track multiple martial arts disciplines at the same time?
Yes. This is one of OpenMat's core differentiators from single-discipline apps. You can log sessions across all 6 disciplines simultaneously — BJJ, Muay Thai, MMA, Strength, Mobility, and Cardio — and your Account Training page shows a full breakdown of sessions, mat hours, and rank/level per discipline. Your XP bar tracks your primary rank (typically your grappling belt) but all disciplines contribute to your overall mat time and achievements. Beacon lets you specify which activity you're looking for when finding partners (rolling, sparring, drilling). The Programs library covers all disciplines with certified instructors. If you train at two gyms in two arts, both are connected to your profile.
What presets does the round timer have?
The round timer includes 6 quick presets: Boxing (3 min / 1 min rest / 5 rounds), Muay Thai (5 min / 1 min rest / 5 rounds), BJJ (5 min / 2 min rest / 5 rounds), Tabata (20 sec / 10 sec rest / 8 rounds), EMOM (1 min / 0 sec rest / 10 rounds), and HIIT (45 sec / 15 sec rest / 12 rounds). You can also fully customize round time (0.25–60 minutes), rest time (0–10 minutes), and number of rounds (1–30). The timer has a fullscreen mode with a large countdown display, work/rest color coding, round progress dots, audio beeps at 10 seconds and 3-2-1, vibration alerts, and a bottom progress bar. Completing rounds earns XP automatically. Settings can be saved as your default in the Settings page so your preferred configuration loads every time.

Can I promote students' belt ranks through the app?
Yes. As a coach, you can promote any student in your roster with a single tap — add a stripe or advance to the next belt level. The promotion updates the student's profile instantly, adds a verified assessment record with your name and rank as the assessor, triggers a notification to the student, and is permanently stored in their assessment history. Students see their updated belt and stripes on their profile, XP bar, share card, and Beacon listing immediately. The promotion creates a shareable moment the student can post to The Mat community feed. Multiple coaches at the same academy can all have promotion permissions if granted by the academy owner.
How does the Academy CRM differ from the Coach plan?
The Coach plan ($19/month, $14 founding rate) is for individual instructors managing their own students and classes — roster, schedule, attendance, belt promotions, announcements, and AI coaching tools. It is a practitioner tool. The Academy CRM ($1,000+/month) is a full business operating system for gym owners — lead generation, AI-powered marketing automation, Meta and Google Ads management, trial class funnel, membership billing, student retention automation, at-risk student alerts, revenue dashboards, multi-coach management, social content generation, and a dedicated account manager. The Coach plan comes with the app. The Academy CRM is a separate enterprise service that includes the app plus a full managed marketing and operations layer. Many academy owners will run both — the Coach plan for their teaching and the CRM for their business growth.
What is the per-student seat fee for the Academy CRM?
The per-student seat fee is custom-quoted based on your current roster size, target capacity, and the scope of services included in your plan. We structure pricing this way intentionally: our financial incentive is aligned with your growth. When you have more students, we earn more — which means we are genuinely motivated to run your marketing, retention, and acquisition systems as effectively as possible. A flat-rate agency charges the same whether you grow or not. We do not. Pricing typically ranges from $2–8 per active student per month depending on plan tier and services. Can I manage multiple locations with the Academy CRM?
Yes. The Academy CRM supports multi-location and franchise structures. Each location can have its own class schedules, coaches, student rosters, and attendance tracking — all visible from a central owner dashboard. Marketing campaigns can be run at the brand level or location-specific. Student profiles follow members across locations if they train at multiple sites. Privacy & Data
What data does OpenMat collect about me?
OpenMat collects: (1) Account data — name, email, handle, rank, disciplines, and profile information you voluntarily provide. (2) Training data — sessions, XP, streaks, achievements, notes, photos, weight logs, and gear you log in the app. (3) Location data — only when Beacon is explicitly enabled by you, and only used to calculate proximity to other active Beacon users. Never stored persistently or shared with third parties. (4) Usage analytics — pages visited, features used, session duration, device type, browser, and IP address for product improvement and security. This data is anonymized in analytics and not sold to third parties. Full details are in our Privacy Policy accessible in the footer of this page.
Does OpenMat sell my data to third parties?
No. OpenMat does not sell, rent, or trade your personal data to third parties. We use your data to operate and improve the app, personalize your experience (including Sensei AI responses), and communicate with you about your account and product updates. We use industry-standard service providers (hosting, email delivery, analytics) who process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements. We do not run third-party advertising networks inside the app, do not sell training data to fitness brands, and do not share individual user data with academy owners beyond what is necessary to operate coach-student relationships within the platform.
Can I delete my account and all my data?
Yes. You can request full account deletion from Settings → Account → Delete Account, or by emailing privacy@openmat.app. We will permanently delete all your personal data within 30 days of the request — account information, training logs, messages, photos, and all associated records. Before deleting, we recommend exporting your data via Settings → Data Management → Export openmat.json so you retain a copy of your training history. Founding member tier status and perks cannot be recovered after account deletion.
Technical
Does OpenMat work offline?
Yes, with limitations. Core features that work offline include: the round timer, the drill tracker, viewing your saved training notes and technique library, reviewing your game plan, and reading previously loaded community posts. Features that require connectivity include: Beacon (requires location services and live data), Sensei AI (requires server connection), The Mat community feed (requires live data), and session logging sync (data is queued locally and syncs when connection is restored). The app auto-saves all data locally every 15 seconds so nothing is lost during connectivity gaps.
What is the openmat.json file format?
The
openmat.json file is a structured JSON export of your complete OpenMat data — version-controlled and human-readable. It includes your user profile, all users in your network, all training sessions with disciplines/types/duration/intensity/notes/XP, all conversations and group messages, all academy data, assessment history, partner ratings, weight log, gear items, tournament history, photo library references, cart and transaction history, and all app settings. The schema is documented and stable across app versions. You can import this file back into any OpenMat account, build your own tools on top of it, or simply archive it as a permanent record of your martial arts training. Auto-saves every 15 seconds. Full export takes under 1 second.How secure is the Sensei AI? Are my conversations private?
Sensei AI runs through a secure server-side proxy with authenticated API calls — no AI API keys are stored on your device or exposed in the browser. All requests are encrypted in transit via TLS. Your conversation history is stored locally on your device by default and is included in your
openmat.json export. Conversations are not used to train third-party AI models. You can clear your entire Sensei AI chat history at any time from Settings → Sensei AI → Clear Chat History. Your training context (rank, sessions, mat hours) is passed with each request to enable personalization but is not retained by the AI service beyond the current session window.

We use your information to: operate and provide the OpenMat service; personalize your experience including Sensei AI responses; process transactions and send transactional emails; send product updates and marketing communications (you may opt out at any time); analyze usage to improve features and performance; detect and prevent fraud, abuse, and security incidents; comply with legal obligations; and respond to customer support requests.
3. Information Sharing
We do not sell, rent, or trade your personal data. We may share information with: (a) Service providers who process data on our behalf under strict data processing agreements (hosting, email delivery, analytics, payment processing); (b) Other users only as necessary to operate features you use (e.g., your public profile information visible to other OpenMat users, your assessment records visible to coaches you authorize); (c) Law enforcement or regulators when required by law or to protect our rights; (d) A successor entity in the event of a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, with notice provided to you.
4. Data Retention
We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide services. You may request deletion of your account and all associated data at any time by emailing privacy@openmat.app. We will process deletion requests within 30 days. Some data may be retained longer where required by law or for legitimate business purposes such as fraud prevention.
5. Your Rights
Depending on your jurisdiction, you may have rights to: access the personal data we hold about you; correct inaccurate data; request deletion of your data; object to or restrict processing; data portability (export your data via openmat.json at any time); withdraw consent; and lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority. 6. Security
We implement industry-standard security measures including TLS encryption for data in transit, encrypted storage for sensitive data, authenticated API access for AI services, and regular security reviews. No method of transmission over the internet is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security but we are committed to protecting your data using commercially reasonable practices.
7. Children's Privacy
OpenMat is not directed to children under the age of 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, contact us at privacy@openmat.app and we will delete the information promptly.
8. International Transfers
OpenMat is operated from the United States. If you are located outside the US, your information may be transferred to and processed in the US. By using OpenMat, you consent to this transfer. We take appropriate safeguards to protect your information in accordance with applicable law.
9. Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. We will notify you of material changes by posting the new policy on this page and updating the "Last Updated" date. Continued use of OpenMat after changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

By accessing or using OpenMat (openmat.app), you agree to be bound by these Terms of Service. If you do not agree, do not use the service.
1. Acceptance of Terms
These Terms constitute a legally binding agreement between you and Proscris LLC ("OpenMat"). You must be at least 13 years of age to use the service. By creating an account, you confirm that you meet this requirement and have the legal capacity to enter into this agreement.
2. License to Use
OpenMat grants you a limited, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable license to use the service for your personal, non-commercial purposes. You may not copy, modify, distribute, sell, or lease any part of the service, nor reverse engineer or attempt to extract the source code of the software.
3. User Content
You retain ownership of content you submit (training logs, photos, notes, posts). By submitting content, you grant OpenMat a worldwide, royalty-free license to use, display, and distribute that content solely to operate the service. You are responsible for ensuring your content does not violate any third-party rights or applicable laws. We reserve the right to remove content that violates these Terms.
4. Prohibited Conduct
You agree not to: impersonate any person or entity or misrepresent your rank or credentials; harass, threaten, or harm other users; post false, misleading, or fraudulent content; use the service for any unlawful purpose; attempt to gain unauthorized access to any part of the service; use automated tools to scrape, crawl, or collect data without permission; or interfere with the operation of the service.
5. Subscriptions and Payments
The student plan is free. Paid plans (Coach, Academy CRM) are billed monthly. By subscribing to a paid plan, you authorize us to charge your payment method on a recurring basis. You may cancel at any time; cancellation takes effect at the end of the current billing period. We do not issue refunds for partial billing periods. Founding member pricing is locked for active subscriptions and reverts to standard pricing upon cancellation and re-subscription.
6. Disclaimer of Warranties
THE SERVICE IS PROVIDED "AS IS" AND "AS AVAILABLE" WITHOUT WARRANTIES OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED. OPENMAT DOES NOT WARRANT THAT THE SERVICE WILL BE UNINTERRUPTED, ERROR-FREE, OR SECURE. MARTIAL ARTS TRAINING INVOLVES PHYSICAL RISK. OPENMAT IS A TRAINING TRACKING AND COMMUNITY PLATFORM — NOT A SUBSTITUTE FOR QUALIFIED IN-PERSON INSTRUCTION. YOU TRAIN AT YOUR OWN RISK.
7. Limitation of Liability
TO THE MAXIMUM EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW, OPENMAT SHALL NOT BE LIABLE FOR ANY INDIRECT, INCIDENTAL, SPECIAL, CONSEQUENTIAL, OR PUNITIVE DAMAGES, OR ANY LOSS OF PROFITS OR REVENUES. OUR TOTAL LIABILITY FOR ANY CLAIM ARISING FROM YOUR USE OF THE SERVICE SHALL NOT EXCEED THE GREATER OF $100 OR THE AMOUNT YOU PAID US IN THE 12 MONTHS PRECEDING THE CLAIM.
8. Indemnification
You agree to indemnify and hold harmless OpenMat, Proscris LLC, and their officers, directors, employees, and agents from any claims, damages, losses, liabilities, and expenses (including legal fees) arising out of your use of the service, your violation of these Terms, or your violation of any rights of another party.
9. Governing Law
These Terms are governed by the laws of the State of Delaware, United States, without regard to conflict of law principles. Any dispute arising from these Terms shall be resolved through binding arbitration in accordance with the AAA Commercial Arbitration Rules, except that either party may seek injunctive relief in a court of competent jurisdiction.
10. Termination
We may suspend or terminate your account at any time for violation of these Terms, illegal activity, or at our sole discretion with reasonable notice. Upon termination, your right to use the service ceases immediately. You may export your data before termination. Provisions that by their nature should survive termination will survive.
